An observatory in the sector of food industry
Sector Observatory of Occupations in the Food industry, France (Observia – Observatoire des Métiers des Industries Alimentaires)
Observia was established in 2004 as an Observatory of Occupations Qualifications and Skills (OPMQC) in the food industry. It gathers together 33 professional federations and five employee trade unions, representing 9 600 companies and 300 000 employees. Observia is part of a comprehensive and continuous process of social dialogue enrichment, the enhancement and promotion of occupations and jobs in the food industry, and the development of employment.
The rich and interactive web portal of Observia provides information, data and trends, reports, tools and other excellent and readable products for users: https://www.observatoires-alimentaire.fr/le-secteur-alimentaire/industries-alimentaires
Observia aims to support professional sectors and companies in defining their training policies and assist employees in developing their professional projects. Observia is a place for study and the shared diagnosis of various issues, and fulfils the following functions:
- Gathers statistical data for better knowledge of the sector by analysing business statistics, occupations, jobs and training;
- Improves knowledge and understanding of occupations and jobs, as well as the skills they require today and in the future;
- Monitors sectoral developments on a regular basis, through anticipatory analysis and forecasting, to propose adjustment actions, particularly in terms of training and the development of occupations;
- Seeks and promotes synergies between the branches of a particular sector with regard to occupational mobility and skills development and validation;
- Communicates by transferring information and management tools to the various occupational branches, enterprises, employees, and industry and institutional partners.
A very relevant product of Observia’s research is the mapping of the main occupations (Cartographie des métiers) in the various branches of the food industry, developed from a structured nomenclature. This mapping forms a major repository of knowledge for understanding the current situation of the sector's occupations, and can serve as a forward-looking tool for the management of occupational mobility, workers’ adaptability, and individuals' professional and skills development. The Cartographie organises the 46 main occupations in the sector into nine occupational families and provides succinct standardised occupational fiches. In terms of activities, each occupation within a family group shares similarities with the other members of the group, making professional progression and mobility easier within one family
Besides reports and occupational fiches, the Cartographie is presented in a readable and attractive manner in the form of a carousel of occupations and jobs on the portal: https://www.observatoires-alimentaire.fr/competences-metiers
Observia publishes forward-looking studies of the sector occupations, with a medium-term time horizon (5–6 years). These studies focus on sensitive occupations from the Cartographie, and combine scenario-building, quantitative analysis and forecasts of future trends. Observia’s Parity Committee is involved in the various phases of the study through its consultative role.
