The what and why of Tracer Studies

A tracer study (or graduate survey) is a survey of graduates from education and training institutions which takes place some time after graduation or at the end of a training course. The subjects of a tracer study can be manifold, but common topics include questions related to the learning process, ease of transition into work or entry into the workforce, career prospects, use of learned competencies, current occupation and ties to the education institution (school, centre, university).

Tracer studies provide information that is valuable for many different actors, and which helps to influence education, training and employment policies, curricula of education and training courses, guidance to help individuals decide on their education or training paths, and judgements about (re)-skilling the labour force.
