Tell us your story. Who was he/she? What qualities he/she had?

As part of a post-graduate qualification in translation, I followed an English writing course taught by Mr Hore, former journalist and précis writer in the UN. He was a very colourful character who would sweep into the class in his black cape, bright red scarf and homburg hat and announce theatrically "I am here to sort out the sheep from the goats". We learnt by doing through the unusual and imaginative tasks he set us, like rewriting passages from the Bible in the style of a popular newspaper. I learnt more about how to write in three months with him than I had in 16 years of school and university. At the end of the course he gifted each student a copy of "The Complete Plain Words", a classic English language style guide. The secrets of his success: charisma, high level professional skills and real industry experience, passion for his subject, a real concern to equip his students with the skills needed in the workplace, and an approach to learning through doing via imaginative and amusing assignments.
