Serbia, along with Ukraine and Romania, is in the vanguard of the gig economy in Eastern Europe. Hundreds of thousands of Serbians, as well as Ukrainians and Romanians, make a living through global freelance platforms, working for international clients. The jobs are mostly in technology, graphics, Internet design and media. Serbia, together with Romania, is ranked as one of the leading countries in both the world and Europe by the percentage of digital workforce in relation to the total population and to the total workforce. Following the first Conference on the “THE FUTURE OF WORK – THE FUTURE IS NOW”, Belgrade, Serbia October 23-24, 2018(the link of conclusions and action agenda of the first annual conference: http://fow.rs/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/FOWrs2018-Highlights-and-Recom…, the second national conference “The Future of Work – Visions in Conflict” (FOW2019) was organised in Belgrade on the 4-5 December. It was attended by a big number of public private institutions working on the future of work in Serbia.. The discussions focused on a range of prospects for the future of Serbia in the light of international organisations’ opposing views of government and corporate accountability for the welfare of workers in the emerging knowledge-based economy. FOW2019 debated the following questions: what policies are needed to promote the development of the new economy in Serbia whilst ensuring dignified work? What are the likely outcomes if choosing the wrong path?
