Call for Papers: The New «Great Transformation» (13th edition)

TOWARDS A WORKLESS SOCIETY? An Interdisciplinary Reflection on the Changing Concept of Work and its Rules in Contemporary Economies

International Conference Organised by ADAPT

in collaboration with the CIELO Laboral Network and the World Employment Confederation (WEC)

Bergamo, 30 November – 2 December 2023

Dear Colleagues,

I'm pleased to inform you that this year’s international conference will take place in-person from Thursday 30 November to Saturday 2 December in Bergamo (Italy).

The 13th edition of the ADAPT conference-series on the New Great Transformation of Work is organised in cooperation with the CIELO Laboral Network and thanks to the financial support of our event content partner, the World Employment Confederation (WEC) and Intesa Sanpaolo.

Work plays a major role in terms of self-definition, though younger generations seem to give it less relevance, as a result of the pandemic and new organizational models. Novel ways of working – along with significant market polarization – have changed the perception of work, now increasingly regarded as an activity to ensure subsistence.

Against this backdrop, the 2023 edition of the conference organized by ADAPT aims at investigating the different aspects that affect today’s meaning of work for people and their identity. A comparative and interdisciplinary approach will be implemented, in order to deal with all the facets of the issues at hand.

ADAPT’s International School of Higher Education in Labour Law and Industrial Relations invites professors, researchers, graduate students, practitioners, and those who have an interest in the conference topics to provide their contribution to the analysis of the social construction of new labour markets from an international and comparative perspective. Research tracks are listed below and can be accessed here:

  • Track 1 – The Wage Issue and In-Work Poverty. Dignity, Subsidies and Promotion of Work
  • Track 2 – Work and Health in Today’s Labour Markets
  • Track 3 – Work and the Crisis of the Welfare State: the Basic Income and the Role of Public Actors
  • Track 4 – Paid and Unpaid Work: Life Experiences and their Social and Legal Recognition
  • Track 5 – Vocational Training: Methods and Tools
  • Track 6 – Work Put to the Test of Individualization and the Crisis of Representation. The Role of the Collective Dimension
  • Track 7 – Today’s Cultural Work: Meaning and Quality
  • Track 8 – Work and its Nuanced Meanings across Time: Some New Definitions
  • Track 9 – The Impact of New Technologies on the Employment Relationship: the Difficult Balance with Workers’ Private Life
  • Track 10 – Economic Changes and Transitional Labour Markets

Abstracts can be submitted by 31 May 2023 through the Abstract Submission Portal, which also contains submission instructions.

The best papers presented at the conference will be selected and, depending on the topic, evaluated for publication in Diritto delle Relazioni Industriali, E-Journal of International and Comparative Labour StudiesProfessionalità studi and Revista Internacional y Comparada de Relaciones Laborales y Derecho del Empleo, or in a special issue of the ADAPT Labour Studies Book-seriesedited by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. Editors will also consider for publication the papers by those who are unable to attend the conference but are willing to provide their contribution just the same.

Participation in the conference is free, though registration is required. For inquiries, contact us by sending an email to: fondazioneadapt@gmail.com
