Good Practice example

Snovsk Higher Vocational School of Forestry is a multidisciplinary vocational education institution located in the border region of Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine. The institution provides training for 586 learners in the following occupations: plasterer, tiler and facing worker, painter; woodworking machine operator, carpenter; cook, confectioner; gardener, forester, gamekeeper; tractor operator of agricultural (forestry) production (categories A1, A2), forester; as well as cook. It also offers pre-tertiary vocational education (professional junior bachelor level) in selected specialities. The institution serves both young people and adults from the local community. The main mission of the institution is to prepare skilled workers who meet the needs of the regional labour market and support local socio-economic development and recovery. The educational process combines theoretical instruction with practice-oriented training, enabling learners to develop professional competencies in conditions close to real working environments. The institution operates two training and practice centres: a Woodworking Technologies Centre and a Modern Forestry Centre.

These centres provide hands-on training using available equipment and technologies. Practical training is delivered by experienced master trainers in cooperation with local employers. Cooperation with local enterprises and municipalities includes organising internships, workplace-based training, and aligning educational content with regional labour market needs. This strengthens the relevance of vocational education and its connection to regional development. Due to its location in a border area, the institution operates in a complex social context. Therefore, psychological support for learners is an important part of the educational process. It is based on a safe and supportive learning environment, trauma-informed approaches, and individual support for vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons, veterans, and women entering non-traditional professions. The institution also develops adult education and lifelong learning opportunities, including retraining and upskilling programmes. Innovative approaches such as project-based learning, digital tools, and green skills development are gradually being integrated into vocational programmes. In the long-term perspective, the institution aims to strengthen its role as a regional provider of vocational education and is gradually moving towards transformation into a Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) through partnership development, modernisation of learning environments, and alignment with European approaches to vocational education and training.
