The Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT), originally the Government Hotel Training School, was established in 1975 with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNDP. Initially under the Department of Tourism in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the school offered upgrading courses for employees in the tourism and hotel sectors, focusing on Food Production, Food & Beverage Services, Front Office Operations, and Housekeeping. Later, MIT expanded to offer 1.5-year certificate courses for school leavers in these areas. In 1997, based on a recommendation from the Department of Personnel Management and Training, the Government transformed the school into a Trust Fund under the Trustees Incorporation Act of 1962. As a non-profit organization, MIT reinvests any surplus revenue into its operations. The conversion allowed for greater operational flexibility, and in 1998, the school was renamed the Malawi Institute of Tourism, with a broadened mandate to cover all sectors of tourism, not just hotel and catering. MIT now offers full-time, evening, and weekend courses, as well as tailor-made short courses for individuals and organizations wishing to enhance their qualifications. MIT's core mission, as defined in its Trust Deed, is to provide training for the hospitality and tourism workforce, supported by practical work at its application hotels. It offers training for workers in hospitality and tourism, conducts workshops, provides consultancy services, and undertakes research and development for the industry. MIT also manages training premises and operates a training hotel to generate income and provide practice facilities for its students. The Institute’s day-to-day operations, including staff salaries, are overseen by the Board of Trustees, which is appointed by the Minister responsible for Tourism.
