DAPP in Zambia has since its inception committed to work with the most vulnerable populations, including children and adolescents, and has implemented programmes to mitigate challenges faced by the young people in the country. Young people below the age of 21 make up to 56% of the country’s population and remain the most affected by social and economic challenges including access to basic services (such as education, health and shelter and also find themselves in dysfunctional family systems. Some children are orphaned early in their lives and lack proper care. The magnitude of these problems create an impending dilemma to the future of the most viable population for the development of the country. With the ever growing youth population and demand for more service provision towards the youth, DAPP supports the government system in the country to provide a collaborative and holistic approach in alleviating these challenges.
DAPP has partnered with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services and the Ministry of Education to provide such support to children and adolescents through its programme, Children’s Town School, which has a rich background in implementing such activities. The DAPP Children’s Town Institution is implemented in Malambanyama area in Chibombo District, Central Province of Zambia. It aims at supporting government efforts in supporting children with the street situations, rehabilitate and provide the with skills training and re-integrate them into the community or into a future job position. The Institution provides the former street children and other vulnerable children and youths from the major towns and cities in Zambia a supportive environment, skills education and survival skills. The centre also runs a community school for Orphans and Vulnerable Children from pre-school to grade 12 for the surrounding community. The school follows the Teveta government curriculum. The Institution works in cooperation with the Ministry of Community Development, and Social Welfare in the selection of vulnerable children to be enrolled. The institution is offering three Vocational Skills trades and namely, General Agriculture, Metal Fabrication and Design Cutting and Tailoring.
