The Netherlands experiences a lack of staff in many #occupations. However, staff is available to work in these occupations in other European countries in 70% of the cases. #Recruitment abroad may therefore form a solution for staff #shortages.

Shortages exist in, on average, 6 other European countries for 166 Dutch shortage occupations. However, staff is available to work in many of these occupations in other European countries. For 70% of the shortage occupations, at least 1 other European country experiences a surplus of staff, as becomes evident from a survey conducted in the 27 #EU countries, Switzerland, and Norway.

At least 5 other European countries have surpluses of staff in 12 occupations marked as shortage occupations in the Netherlands (see visual). In the case of administrative and executive secretaries, which are in short supply in 4 countries, a full 11 countries feature a surplus.

For 30% of the Dutch shortage occupations, no other European country experiences a surplus of staff. The profession of nursing professional, for example, is a shortage occupation in 18 countries and a surplus occupation in none. None of the 29 surveyed countries have a surplus of applications programmers, either, while there are shortages of them in 15 countries.

The comparison between the Dutch shortage occupations and the foreign shortage and surplus occupations was conducted by Michel van Smoorenburg (UWV/Public Employment Service in the Netherlands) in co-operation with EURES The Netherlands, on the basis of the Report on Labour Shortages and Surpluses 2022 of the European Labour Authorityhttps://lnkd.in/en_vT4Fa . The data for the situation in the Netherlands have been submitted to the ELA by the UWV/EURES in 2022. The Dutch version has been published on the UWV-portal the 9th of June 2023 https://lnkd.in/eBRrfGzA. NOS news, which has an average of 1 million viewers (Public broadcaster in the Netherlands) paid attention to it on primetime, as well as several national newspapers.
