Setting of the practice: face to face
Description of the practice:
In recent years, we have seen a lack of motivation among students and an increase in absenteeism. Besides, during evaluations, several students respond with paragraphs from the course material. Therefore, we cannot discerned whether they have just learned the course or whether they have learned and understood it. In addition, we noted a decrease in the mastery of the French language
To increase interest and motivation among students, and get them reviewing and synthesizing chapters we asked them to design and script a play for the end of the semester. At the beginning, we announced that this theater project would be part of the evaluation of our module.
Before presenting their plays, students should submit the script its on the platform to lead them to work on French both orally and in writing.
We did this experiment with different students’ sections and modules. We asked students to divide into groups of 2 or 3 members to carry out their projects. They present their plays at the end of the semester to include the different chapters
Thereby, for the module “Introduction to big data” we teach in the master degree of data science, in the play, a new recruit must convince the boss to use this in his business.
For the module “ICT to enhance training and skills” we teach in the master degree in human resource management, in the play, a new recruit in the department of human resources management had to convince his director to introduce and to use ICT. After plays’ presentations, we asked students to fill in a questionnaire to have their feedback.
For the question “During the writing of the script, did you consult the course to prepare your arguments?”, only 60% of the students answered “yes”.
To the question “Did the writing of your play lead you to revise your knowledge of the French language?”, half of the student answered with “yes”.
According to 70% of the students, the presentation of the play allowed them to better assimilate the course’s content. Overall, 100% of the students find this experience beneficial for them and also beneficial for their soft skills and 80% encourage to repeat it with next promotions.
