Setting of the practice: online
Description of the practice:
The Online video course on gender topics is created for Belarusian youth 18-25 yo, who starts their journey or wants to expand their knowledge in gender field. The course was developed using the blended learning method, lasting 5 weeks, and uploaded to an online platform that can be used on any gadget. It consists of 15 videos - introductory and 14 educational videos, lasting 7-10 min - and 4 animated video situations on gender issues.
The course begins with introduction, a common Zoom-call, and ends with the presentation of certificates, summing up and evaluation. Every of 3 educational weeks includes 4-5 educational videos with concentrated information on gender topics of the week and 3-4 required tasks (plus a bonus optional task). Every week ends with an 3h group Zoom-call, where the trainers and the group discuss the topics presented in the animated video situation. During the review week participants can recall the 3-weeks material and then complete a final task, the purpose of which was to test knowledge of gender topics in an artificially created conversation that can occur in real life.
The reputation of the trainers' network and the value of the issued certificates are important for our team, for this reason a rather serious evaluation system was developed. We have created a quality product, which has already brought excellent results: 88% of those who successfully complete the course, while on average 10% of those who register complete free online courses (Coursera, 2020).
All the measures and actions taken above helped to successfully achieve the goal of the course - to promote the dissemination of information about the opportunities and benefits of gender equality, the negative impact of gender stereotypes, the acquisition of non-violent and safe communication skills in interpersonal relationships, and to support young people in Belarus through the formation of a safe space of like-minded people. We believe the course can be easily implemented in different countries and we are open for sharing more details.
Some of the participant's feedback: “In the simplest words, the trainers managed to explain complex gender issues, ambiguous things, terms, etc.”, “I did not expect that watching videos and performing various tasks would be so interesting”, “I updated my knowledge on the topic of gender equality, learned interesting statistics, learned about assertive behavior.”
We are also preparing the second part of the course on non-formal education, where participants will be able to acquire or improve their competence as peer-to-peer trainers of non-formal education and conduct trainings on gender issues.
