Organisation: Gimnazija Banjaluka

Setting of the practice: face to face

Description of the practice:

This practice is innovative because it demonstrates an active learning during individual work with absence of teaching. Students interact and synthesize the concepts, making learning more effective than in a typical classroom environment. Higher order thinking skills are involved. Students are encouraged to move around without having to sit in one place for a long time, removing boredom which otherwise makes learning uninteresting. It allows students to interact with multiple prompts (questions, short texts, images) in a way that generates ideas for further discussion and learning. Furthermore, it allows students to create a graphical representation of an event or process by displaying items sequentially along a line. That can be organized by time of day, date, or event. Adding an image for each label makes a timeline more visually appealing. The role of the teacher/trainer is to prepare materials (text and photos) and to give instruction to the participants. The entire work students will do. Each of them suppose to choose one of the document from the materials, study it for the short period of time, present it to the rest of the group and stick it on the wall, placing it on the right place (criteria for groups can be time (timeline), place, importance, inclusion or other). Every student gets an opportunity to present one piece of material and to contribute to creation of timeline on the Gallery Wall. In the end, all students will walk pass the Gallery Walk and explore what have they created. A Gallery Walk engages all students in the feedback and reflection process. Learners and teachers collaborate to develop success criteria for a piece of work, then co-develop strategies for offering constructive peer feedback. Students produce a piece of work then display their work for their peers to view.In the last phase of practice they discuss what have they learned in this activity. Gallery Walk gets students out of their chairs and actively involves them in synthesizing important concepts, in consensus building, in writing, and in public speaking. In Gallery Walk teams rotate around the classroom, composing answers to questions as well as reflecting upon the answers given by other groups. This practice is perfect for the history, sociology, philosophy, geography, but besides of the social studies it can be used in other subjects whenever is graphical representation needed. It can be used also in the online learning, where students can post document on the Jamboard or using Google documents.
