The Challenge Addressed

AI Democratic Compass is an innovative teaching practice that uses artificial intelligence to simulate real-life school situations in which students must make decisions, reflect on consequences, and understand how their actions shape the community.

The practice addresses a major challenge in schools today: how to help learners develop responsible decision-making, empathy, critical thinking, and democratic competences in an engaging and meaningful way.

Why the Practice is Innovative

The innovation lies in combining four key competence areas in one learning approach: citizenship, digital competences, personal and social learning (SEU), and numerical/logical reasoning.

AI generates realistic scenarios such as conflicts between students, fair distribution of resources, noise or behaviour problems, planning a school event, or allocating a virtual school budget.

For each scenario, students receive three possible solutions. They analyse the emotional, social, ethical, and academic consequences of each option through AI-generated feedback, supported by simple mathematical models (graphs, percentages, impact scores).

Type of Integration and Key Competences

The practice integrates:

  • Citizenship
  • Digital competences
  • Personal and social learning (SEU)
  • Numerical/logical reasoning
  • Critical thinking
  • Empathy
  • Responsible decision-making
  • Democratic competences

The integration is natural: students use digital tools, apply reasoning and basic math, demonstrate social-emotional understanding, and engage in active citizenship.

Role of the Teacher/Trainer

The teacher acts as a facilitator, guiding reflection and group discussion, and helping students connect their choices with key democratic values such as fairness, respect, participation, dialogue, and non-violent conflict resolution.

Students learn how to justify choices, evaluate different viewpoints, and understand the impact of their decisions on their peers and the wider school community.

Type of Learning Activities

Learning activities include:

  • Individual decision-making tasks
  • Group discussions
  • Emotional mapping
  • Data interpretation
  • Simulation of democratic processes (voting, negotiation, prioritisation)
  • Short written reflections

Impact of the Practice

The impact is visible at several levels:

  • Students become more responsible and thoughtful in everyday behaviour;
  • Classroom climate improves due to better understanding of emotions and consequences;
  • Learners develop confidence in expressing opinions and listening to others;
  • Critical thinking and empathy increase;
  • Digital competences grow through constructive use of AI.

Potential for Replication

The practice is highly scalable and easy to replicate. It requires only an internet-connected device and can be implemented in any subject (Maths, Civic Education, Languages, Science) or as part of class tutor time.

The model can be expanded with new scenarios or adapted for different age groups.

Because of its modular and flexible design, the AI Democratic Compass can be integrated into formal lessons, project-based learning, or school-wide citizenship programmes.
