The history of IES Álvaro Yáñez in Bembibre dates back to 1975, when the institution began its journey as a Delegated Section of the Maestría Center of Astorga. At that time, the school had only 123 enrolled students, and the facilities were very modest. During its early years, the school offered First Grade Vocational Training in the fields of Metal and Administrative Studies, and later, the Automotive specialization was added to the curriculum. In 1992/93, the institution was officially renamed IES Álvaro Yáñez and began offering the second cycle of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). The school expanded its educational offering to include three types of Baccalaureate programs: Technological, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Later on, the Nature and Health Sciences branch was added. The school also offered four vocational training cycles in Administrative Management, Finance and Administration, Electromechanics of Vehicles, and Bodywork. Additionally, the school introduced a Social Guarantee Program, which was later renamed the Initial Professional Qualification Program in the 2008/09 academic year.

Today, IES Álvaro Yáñez is renowned for providing high-quality education with a rich and diverse educational offering that includes Baccalaureate programs, Vocational Training, and Bilingual education. The school is committed to the use of modern technologies, language teaching, and the pursuit of the 2030 Agenda goals for sustainable development. It promotes an inclusive and supportive environment that fosters the integration of all students, ensuring their optimal development and success.

The school’s growth and evolution over the decades have made it an integral part of the Bembibre community. From its humble beginnings with just a handful of students and limited resources, IES Álvaro Yáñez has grown into a center of educational excellence that offers a wide range of programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in today’s globalized world. Through its commitment to academic rigor, social responsibility, and technological innovation, the institution continues to serve as a key educational pillar in the region.
