Linking CPD with daily practice and in-company learning
CPD can be linked with daily practices through peer learning. This could address interdisciplinary approaches, changes in domain/content and pedagogical content knowledge; relevance and practicality of the innovation; and learning by inquiry/doing (action-reflection).
For vocational training, most ‘situated’ learning takes place in a work environment. Bringing teachers into closer contact with the realities of companies is essential. Situated learning ensures the acquisition of transferable applied knowledge. ‘Situated’ implies that attention is paid not only to places and material conditions, but also to the social environment in which the learning takes place. In the US and Australia, VET teachers are encouraged to undertake placements in companies, in order to develop new curriculum resources, lesson plans, teaching and learning materials or associated pedagogic materials; or undertake a project to develop training for the workplace that would support enterprise objectives and contribute to innovation.
