NATIONAL INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION SURVEY IN MOROCCO
The Moroccan Haut Commissariat au Plan (National Statistical Institute) has just published a note with the first results of its National International Migration Survey:

The survey has been implemented according to the Med-HIMS methodology (Household International Migration Survey) developed in the framework of the MEDSTAT Euromed regional programme. The survey, concerning international migration of Moroccan citizens, will be completed in the first quarter of 2020 with a second phase concerning “forced and irregular migration” (i.e., immigrants in Morocco). The full report of this first stage of the survey will be published in February. #migration
The representative and retrospective survey has reached 15,077 households in Morocco, of which 8,144 households of current migrants (in total, 11,780 current migrants), 4,072 households of returning migrants (4,635 individuals) and 2,860 households of non migrants (5,765 individuals).
Some interesting results:
- Migration affects 8.4% of the 8.1 households existing in Morocco.
- 68.3 are men, of which 69.2% migrated for economic reasons; among women, only 20.5 migrated for economic reasons (and 30.4 for educational reasons, against only 22.3 for men).
- 73.2% of migrants had as destination country France, Spain or Italy.
- Average age of first migration was 25.3 years
- 33,6% of migrants reached the university education level (24,5% obtained a degree), 17.4 a qualifying secondary education grade and 16.3 general secondary education.
- 64% of migrants are occupied in the host countries (only 38.2% among women).
- Among returning migrants, 52.5% have between 15 and 39 years of age. 28.5 of returning migrants have higher education (39.1% among men). 44.5 of those returning migrants are occupied (only 27.2 among women); among those, 48.5% are self-employed or employers. 14% of returning migrants declare having invested in Morocco, mainly in the trade sector.
- 23.3 of non-migrants between 15 and 59 years old express their intention to migrate (40.3% in the 15-29 age group, 50.9% among unemployed non migrants and 40.6% among non-migrants who have followed a vocational training).
It is particularly interesting to compare the results of this National International Migration Survey with the results obtained in 2011-2012 in the survey on migration and skills implemented by the ETF (see “Migration and Competences in Morocco. Résultats de l'enquête 2011-12 sur la migration et le lien entre compétences, migration et développement »)
