We know that “Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration” was adopted in the UN General Assembly in 2018. You can access to the full text at https://www.un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/73/195
This is a non-binding resolution which was accepted by 152 countries in total. There were 5 countries voted against (USA, PL, CZ, HU, IL) and 12 countries abstained in the voting (incl. IT, AU, AUS, AZ, EGY, ROM, BUL, CH).
What you might not know is the importance of “skills and employability of migrants” in the global compact. In fact, the word “skills” was quoted 48 times and in 9 Objectives in the whole text. The Objective 18 has a particular focus on skills: “invest in skills development and facilitate mutual recognition of skills, qualifications and competences”. Investing in skills is also seen as a ‘determinant’ in order to minimize adverse drivers of migration (Obj.2), to facilitate pathways for regular migration (Obj. 5), and to empower migrants for social inclusion (Obj.16).
Skills are on the agenda of migration… as we wanted…
