"STEAM in School Curriculum: challenges to adapt STEAM in schools"
The key question of the last catch-up meeting (3rd July) of the New Learning Club dedicated to “Innovative STEAM Education”.
STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) education is gaining popularity in schools. Despite its popularity little empirical data exists to guide effective instructional practices, and even less is known about the challenges associated with instruction. Challenges included pacing/time, student understanding of content and process, issues relating to planning, and concerns about school district policies. Two other challenges that were less frequent, but still notable, included technology integration and issues related to assessment. During the meeting, we have discussed the final outcome of the Club, that will be a set of STEAM teaching scenarios with examples, guidelines and tools, aiming to raise awareness and build capacity about STEAM innovation among “newcomers”.
