The ETF and European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) organised a new joint event to present the preliminary findings of the SELFIE Work-Based Learning pilots, providing key information for the validation of the SELFIE WBL tool and its launch planned in 2021.
Let’s start with the key figures and dates of the pan-European pilot.
Participants come from 9 countries (DE, FR, HU, RO, GE, ME, RS and TR), including more than 135 VET schools implementing dual education and more than 280 companies providing work-based learning.
EU VET Policies related to SELFIE for Work-Based Learning has been presented by Helen Hoffmann, European Commission -DG EMPL, with a clear message: the vision for vocational education and training has a strong focus on digital transformation and SELFIE is, for example, a tool that can support digitalisation of VET, that in the next years must improve agility in adapting to changes and flexibility in the provision in the context of the digital and green transition.
Experts from the four partner countries involved briefly presented the pilot in their respective country. They shared key outcomes focusing, for example, on the most significant differences between the four respondent groups among the 8 different thematic areas covered by SELFIE WBL.
Not surprisingly, the respondent groups evaluated the use of ICT significantly differently in many cases. Transversally, assessment with the support of ICT seems to be an area with the major need for improvement.
It is important to stress that the pilot has been undertaken in very difficult and exceptional circumstances of COVID-19, with schools in lockdown or struggling with setting up hybrid lessons.

The event was also an opportunity to hear the voice of the European Forum of Technical & Vocational Education & Training (EfVET) and EU pilot coordinators, providing insights from their experience.
And… what if piloting countries decide to further implement SELFIE WBL?
Following the brief presentation of the methodology recently developed by the JRC and ETF to upscale and integrate SELFIE in education and training systems, country teams discussed how SELFIE WBL could support on-going VET reforms, who should be involved and what are the next steps?
It is important to note that the pilot outcomes are not representative of national education and training systems. Still, bearing this in mind, the pilots showed that dual education in partner countries are still at an early stage and pilot outcomes can provide valuable, evidence-based suggestions for its further development.
Finally, next steps in the SELFIE WBL development process are to analyse the results of the country reports, implement the recommended changes from January onwards and finalise the SELFIE WBL tool and have it ready for going life by mid-2021. Stay tuned!
