How the journey started?

  • ETF Network of Excellence launched the Initiative called “Developing and Sharing Excellence on digitalisation of teaching and learning”
  • Joined by: Polytechnic Institute Nacala & Polytechnic Institute of Nhamatanda & KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College
  • Mentored by: ETF DIGI ENE experts supported by HUMANA & STEPS

Main NEEDS identified by Polytechnic Institute Nacala & Polytechnic Institute of Nhamatanda & KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College:

  • Keep up with digital transition by developing a comprehensive digital strategy and adopting digital classrooms, which includes tools for distance learning and online/offline learning materials.
  • Enhance teachers’ digital competence to meet the demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

FOCUS of the project:

? How to meaningfully integrate digital technology into education?

?How to scale up innovation in my school?

In action:

During the project, involved partners: Polytechnic Institute Nacala & Polytechnic Institute of Nhamatanda & KwaZulu-Natal Experimental College supported by HUMANA carried out the assessment of schools’ digital readiness (with the SELFIE tool), which will lead to the creation of a broader strategy for digital transition.

The SELFIE school report brought together and compared views of school leaders, teachers and students and provides schools with a snapshot of where they stand currently in relation to strategy and practice in the use of digital technologies for teaching and learning. The results from SELFIE help start a dialogue within the school community. It is a good basis to identify and discuss strengths and weaknesses and to create a school plan on using digital technologies to support learning.

Recommendations (what we have learned):

  • Start from an evidence – based planning (What are your real needs? What are the gaps? Do not jump between programs, trainings without a clear understanding what is the problem which needs to be solved). Implement assessment tools into the management practices, e.g. SELFIE.
  • Apply whole–school approach (involvement of the whole school community is crucial).
  • Build the culture of innovation with the application of collaborative learning and monitoring progresses;
  • Once started the process never stops: continue systemic and sustainable transformation.

IMPACT:

  • 35 teachers and 70 students from 3 schools from Mozambique and South Africa get involved into the project.
  • It raised understanding and awareness about the digital culture among teachers, learners, and rural communities. With this built capacity, the targeted schools can catalyse digital teaching and learning. Moreover, experience will be shared with other TVET Schools of the Humana network.
  • This initiative served to mobilize school managers, teachers and students to reflect about digitalisation and start planning the way forward. SELFIE has been particularly useful to assess and benchmark the schools’ current status. Additionally, through the participation in workshops and learning pills, school managers and teachers have had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with useful tools and methodologies and learn.

OBJECTIVE of development projects

The Development Projects implemented inside “DIGI ENE Initiative “Developing and Sharing Excellence on digitalisation of teaching and learning” aimed at materializing the change in the form of piloting new tools/approaches/methodologies by selected CoVEs.
