The European Commission has a major commitment to the development of Centres of Vocational Excellence and it has made them a key element of its strategy for raising the quality, effectiveness and attractiveness of vocational education and transmitting excellence internationally.   The European Training Foundation is working closely with the European VET Associations, with existing Centres of Vocational Excellence, with national and international development organisations and experts  to develop the tool which will be linked to activities set out in Erasmus plus calls and will make it easier for vocational schools to work together in groups to develop as Centres of Vocational Excellence.

Centres of Vocational Excellence and vocational schools will be able to select the dimensions of excellence they wish to self-assess against and they will be able to access and share good practices that exemplify excellent activities, performance or systems.  The tool will assist users to consult within and outside their organisations – in order to make collective judgements based on shared evidence.

We have just completed a public consultation on the self-assessment framework and we are currently looking to for Centres of Vocational Excellence and vocational schools that would like to pilot the self-assessment tool between April and May of 2023.  Suitable schools will either be Centres of Vocational Excellence already or will be interested in developing towards becoming a CoVE.  They may wish to self-assess individually or as part of a cluster.  They should be able to engage internal and external stakeholders to participate in self-assessment in one of the following 6 languages:  Italian, French, German, Polish, Spanish or English.

Schools participating in the pilot will receive training and guidance and in addition will be offered mentoring sessions during the self-assessment process.

Furthermore, schools and CoVEs that participate in the pilot will have the opportunity, in 2024, to gain formal recognition of their level of excellence, through the proposed label currently being developed on behalf of the European Union.
