The Nhamatanda Polytechnic Institute was established in 1996 as an initiative of ADPP Mozambique, aiming to contribute to the vocational training of young people in the country within the scope of promoting Technical-Vocational Education and self-employment. Throughout its history, the institution has undergone several developmental stages. Initially, it provided elementary-level training in the areas of Agriculture and Livestock, Construction (Master Builder), and Commerce and Administration. Between 1996 and 1999, the institution operated under the name School of Arts and Crafts (Escola de Artes e Ofícios), offering elementary courses for students entering after the 7th grade, with a one-year duration and equivalence to the 10th grade (basic level).
From 2000 to 2018, it was renamed ADPP – Nhamatanda Polytechnic College, continuing to provide basic courses in the aforementioned specialties. The entry requirement remained the 7th grade, with a two-year training period, granting equivalence to the 10th grade. In 2019, following the Technical-Vocational Education reform and to address new educational challenges, the Mid-Level Course in Agriculture and Livestock was introduced based on Competency Standards. With this shift, the institution was renamed the Nhamatanda Polytechnic Institute-ADPP. Currently, the Nhamatanda Polytechnic Institute is accredited for Vocational Certificates 3, 4, and 5, offering training for the following professional paths: Agriculture; Livestock; Agricultural Extension and Promotion. By 2025, the institution had trained a total of 2,551 technicians, 995 of whom are women, demonstrating its contribution to gender inclusion in technical-vocational training.
