Description of the practice:

- AI systems are increasingly penetrating our world. AI In School is a project that originated from the concern that students should understand artificial intelligence (AI) and the realisation that there is a gap in the curriculum of secondary education to address this.
- We create educational material for secondary education related to AI, within authentic STEM contexts, and linked to the mandotory learning objectives and existing curriculum goals. All this educational material is available on our website https://dwengo.org/en/aiopschool/.
AI In School consists of several subprojects that can be used as a learning line about AI concepts in secondary education. The themes are AI and Climate Change, Social Robotics, Language Technology, AI in the Arts, AI in Agriculture and Horticulture, and AI in Healthcare.
- The learning activities are both theoretical and hands-on. All projects include programming. Depending on the project, this is block-based (Blockly) or text-based (C++ or Python). But there are also unplugged activities, e.g. microscopy. The learning material is offered in the form of online learning paths that can be completed both in class and independently. Moreover, those learning paths are primarily intended for teachers to professionalise themselves.
- More than 500 teachers enrolled in a professional development program on (a part of) the project, and we estimate more than 1000 students to have enrolled in the project already.
