Rationale: Standards for 21st-century teaching and learning note the importance of acquiring knowledge and skills that prepare learners for future life. Hence, it is important to cultivate self-regulated learning (SRL) by focusing on math and literacy.   The practice presented in this description concentrates on promoting SRL in a generic ways.  One of the ways to achieve SRL is by applying the pedagogical principles and values involved in Engaged and Active learning methods- such as in  project or problem based-learning approaches to teaching and learning.

Engaging and Active learning methods were developed based on the need for educational systems to be more meaningful for the learner.  Those  methods promotes and  inspires internal motivation to learn, develop and contribute to society and the community—all very important competencies for the 21st Century. It is important to promote this approach among academic staff, students and the educational community around us.

Engaging and Active learning invites change in a teaching and learning concepts.  It is a structured process that includes the following aspects: self-regulated learning, collaborative discourse, community of learners, social justice, commitment and involvement in the community. Independence, autonomy and deal with Teachers' training in Inclusive Education. Most important in this process is that the learner applies these skills to cultivate and develop meaningful and relevant projects and / or to deal with educational or moral  dilemmas that he or she faces.  

There are some challenges: 

1.    Training lecturers, pedagogical instructors or teachers in the pedagogy and methodology to integrate this approach to the subjects that they are teaching.    

2.    Providing the resources so that the projects can be actualized and have its impact on the students, teachers, institution and community.    

3.    Developing programs or activities that links educational institutions to the community.  This may include: training teams in schools, exhibitions, research papers, seminars, conferences, developing a database of alternative assessment and formative assessment which includes varies indicators social and pedagogical. 

4.    Promoting and applying innovative initiatives that includes using technology skills.

5.     Cultivating diversity and inclusion of all groups in the community so that all voices are heard.
