European Training Foundation (EFT) conducted a webinar entitled “Unleashing Interactive Learning Techniques” on Wednesday, December 8th, 2021 at 3 p.m. (Rome time). This webinar aimed at helping secondary and vocational teachers in the South and East Mediterranean (Lebanon, Tunisia, Morroco, Jordan, Egypt, Palestine, and Algeria) to explore innovative and interactive teaching practices that promote student teacher interactions on one side and student engagement, creativity, and problem-solving skills on another side.
Mr. Julian Stanley, Educational expert at ETF, and Dr. Nehme Safa welcomed the participants and set out the goals of the webinar. Afterwards, participants introduced themselves, and Dr. Nehme Safa started his presentation using Mentimeter to find out what participants understood by interactive teaching building on this to provide an overview of the concept. Dr. Nehme Safa then shared best innovative practices developed by his students. These practices relate to teaching the concepts of “volume” ,“surface area” in maths where students play the role of engineers whose task is to design food cans with lowest cost and high quality. He also presented an innovative activity developed by his students on the teaching of vectors. Students played the role of air traffic controller where they employed their mathematical knowledge on vectors to determine aircraft’s direction and explore the effect of wind on the aircraft’s speed.
Mr. Ashraf Boussi, who is a vocational electronics teacher, presented his creative teaching practices that helped his students modify the programming code of an electro-mechanics paint machine to reduce cost through the installation of a sensor.
Then Mr. Ali Mhanna, who is a secondary maths teacher and trainer, shared his innovative methods of teaching geometry. Mr. Ali Mhanna showed how mathematical knowledge of proportion, axis of symmetry and geometry could be developed during a STEM project to design a balloon car, and exploring how the range and the velocity of the car is affected by wheel diameter.
Mr. Shakib Jaber, who is a secondary Physics teacher, described an innovative technique to teach the concept of « electromagnetic oscillation » through setting up FM station that served his school.
The webinar ended with a summary, presented by Dr. Nehme Safa, of the interactive and innovative techniques employed in the teaching practices of the speakers, so that participants can make use of them in their teaching.
