Blog Series

SUMMARY:

The current environmental challenges urge a re-thinking of the economic transformation and growth of our societies, that should be based on the human dimension and capacities for sustainable development. Young people will play a critical role in this change, and therefore education and training are key components to move towards sustainable societies.

Educators must be equipped with the capacities to build green skills and green attitudes among their learners, both when working on green-related subjects and across the curriculum.

The webinar was organised by the ETF Community of Innovative Educators in collaboration with the GRETA (Greening Responses to Excellence through Thematic Actions), that is the green VET partnership in the ETF Network for Excellence. It presented practical approaches and methods to build green skills and attitudes among learners, and foster a discussion on what needs to happen for educators to become key change-makers for sustainable societies.

The Webinar was attended by 144 participants.

The event was opened by Tremeur Denigot, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, Education for Climate Coalition, who presented several EC programmes and initiatives regarding the role of education for greener societies

This speech was followed by a panel of speakers who debated about green skills projects and practices in several countries:

➡️ Ilknur Birer, Türk Telekom Mesleki ve Teknik Anadolu Lisesi, introduced his project on Alternative agriculture, based in Turkey

➡️ Angelina Taneva-Veshoska & Ana Tomik, from Institute for Research in Environment, Civil Engineering and Energy, North Macedonia, presented practices on Making a local impact and developing skills for an inspiring and sustainable future

➡️ Why it is important to use Mass Media and Social Networks in sustainable education, is the title of the contribution from Liya Bayramova, Executive Director of GEM CSR and ESG Consulting, who provided examples from Azerbaijan at international level.

➡️ Finally Maia Bliadze, professor at European University, National Center for Teacher Professional Development, in Georgia, explained the Teacher professional development for green skills promotion/enhancement at secondary schools.

After the panel, Susan Nielsen, coordinator of the ETF GRETA network, gave her input on how can teachers contribute to greener and more sustainable societies.

At the end of the webinar, an open session helped to share with the community members other interesting practices regarding green skills: a shared board was used by participants to suggest examples and to highlight all the possible needs and challenges in terms of teaching green skills.

The event took place  on the Zoom platform and was delivered in English, Russian and Arabic. The recordings are available below:
